Zombie Hospital Furniture

I would like to start off by saying a big Happy Birthday to my brother Gareth! He would have been 29 today. I wish he could be here to celebrate with us. We plan to have a meal along with some cider (as he liked cider), and then we are also planing to send up a birthday balloon with a note attached to it. It still feels at times that he is still here, and I have to think about it sometimes to realise that he isn't. I still can't believe it, like it hasn't sunken in. I know it happened, but I just can't comprehend it. It's like my brain refuses to believe what happened, and every time I start thinking about it, everything just shuts down. Anyway... it's his birthday, and I hope wherever he is, and whatever he is doing, that he has a great day, and we'll always be thinking of him :)

Now...zombie stuff...

After reading replies to my last blog it gave me a lot of ideas to consider. One that made sense for me to do right now would be some hospital furniture to compliment the hospital range of zombies. Don't worry, I will be bringing out other zombie ranges, this was just my first.

So, I made some beds, mainly 2 poses, sitting up and laying down. We cast them in resin this morning and I painted one (VERY roughly). These will provide a solid base foundation so over the next week I can dress them up to house sheets/pillows/people alive/corpses etc etc.

So here's one of the "base models", like a prototype. The base hasn't been cast yet. It's not complete as it only has a basic mattress on it. So final ones will be all kitted out in various situations. I've made plans which cover pretty much most scenarios, so depending what you are aiming for it should be covered, whether it's a ward of corpses, a ward with patients who need protecting, or a ward which has recently been fed upon, or simply an empty ward... it's all included :P

Oh by the way, that's a bananaman which Gareth sculpted for the Hasslefree "Dress a Kev" competition :)

I have heard no news about the recent set of zombies which are with the metal caster, but I plan to get these beds finished in time for release with the new zombie nurses.

Cheers again for reading. As always, all comments are very welcome.

  1. Sorry to hear about your brother. I lost my own brother almost 2 years ago, and it's Father's Day here, which got me thinking of my Dad, he passed Christmas of 1981. Still makes Christmas a little sad. I like that Bananaman sculpt a lot. Nice to include that as a further rememberance for Gareth. The Hospital looks excellent. I think I will have to get some of those. Are you planning on doing any examining tables?

    1. Sorry to hear about brother and father :( It's father's day here too, so we are kind of having a double "celebration" this evening. The bananaman sculpt is actually for sale on the Hasslefree website http://hfminis.co.uk/shop?product=bananaman-kev~hfdk010&category=miniatures~dress%252da%252dkev .

He is currently the figure of choice to show scale. He's slightly smaller compared to the average 28mm, but he's a decent size.

Examining tables: I could make some. I'd have to think about what variations I could make, like whether to include people on them, or whether to have people just on the hospital beds, so the examination tables will be scenery more than anything.

  2. Carl, I feel your loss for Gareth. We always got on well together on the Forum of Doom and he is greatly missed. My father died late last year so the pain of losing such a close family member is still raw with me and my mum. It is not easy to lose anyone you loved so much.

I have only one word to say about your prototype hospital bed - FANTASTIC! I can see this being a huge seller for you.

    1. Sorry to hear about your dad :( About an hour ago we sent a balloon into the sky with a message for Gareth. So hopefully if it doesn't get stuck in a tree or fall in the ocean, someone might find it and send me an email! :)

Cheers for liking the prototype. We are having quite a few mis-casts, but it could just be an "off day". Hopefully the beds once done up will look pretty cool :)

    1. Thanks :)

Yeah it came out not too bad. We are having a couple of resin casting problems. But hopefully we can sort that out. Tomorrow I shall start on dressing up the beds! :D

  4. Oh, he sculpted that bannana? :D I saw it when checking HF mini's page a while ago. It reminds me of Banana Njam cartoons I was watching as a kid. Don't know the english name, but heres the picture:

Its about Eric who eats a banana and becomes a super hero..ish :D

Great work on the bed. And even better speed! I haven't seen much of those in real life, but it seems a bit low sitting. Of course the reason might as well be mini's base. Maybe you should considering putting it on a base for display, on a base as such or maybe raising the the frame just a bit? I really like that diagnose paper thing on the end of the bed, nice little detail!

With these speed, you should be selling hospital building by the end of the summer, hehe.

    1. Haha That's "Banana Man!" the super hero (well kinda, you know what I mean). We used to watch that too! But yeah Gareth sculpted it and it was chosen by Kev and Sally's (Hasslefree)children as the funniest sculpt!

Cheers for liking the bed. Haha, they didn't take too long to make. So hopefully by the end of next week everything will be finished :) I'll post pics when done. Very good point, I should probably put it on a base to lift it to the same level as the figure. The real beds work using electronic lifting systems, so they can go really low like a normal bed, but be elevated pretty high! So I assume this one is in the lower state. I have sculpted like spring bars underneath on the base to give the impression that there are electronics...it cant be seen in the pic though...

    2. Banana man makes all the sense! :D

Just keep in mind thats my opinion on the bases, some of the people probably wouldn't like it, so it might be good to ask around for the opinion :)

    3. It makes sense for them to be on rectangular bases. I will need to buy some in as I plan to do some horse based figures too in the future. So I can always pop some in with the bed, and if people want to use them they can, if not...well, they can discard them :)

    4. The 40k bike bases could work well, those with rounded edges.
Thats also a good idea. Maybe even put the option to get a base with the scenery items? Like a check box?

    5. I think the easiest thing (less hassle) is just to give the base to people to use if they wish. Because I use Paypal I'm limited to what I can do (checkbox wise). When I get a proper shopping cart made one day, it'll be a lot easier to do :)

  5. Happy Birthday Gareth, I'm sure hes watching 'The Doctor' Thoughts are with you and you family.

    Beds look awesome

  6. That bed looks fantastic, didn't take you long to get to that. Good job. I can't wait until you are done with them (and other hospital furniture).

I'm sure your brother appreciates and knows of your efforts to remember him today.

  7. Great work with the bed; looking forward to seeing more.

Do you think you would be able to cast/sell the bed's 'undercarriage' separately perhaps?

    1. Cheers! I'm working on them as we speak :) Because of how the resin casts, the beds will be a two part mould consisting of the main bed and the undercarriage. I would have to sell them together as that makes a complete bed, but it will be up to the buyer to glue them together (if they wish to do so). So if they just want to use them as normal beds then they should be able to with a few minor conversions

    2. Oki-doki! I was just asking about selling separately as there are bed models included in the Stoetzel structures hospital model I've just got and I was thinking about putting the card bed onto your undercarriage ... tbh, though, I think that would look a teeny-weeny bit silly, so I'll just have to wait until you release yours to put beds in my (unbuilt!) hospital

  8. GJ! how long did it take to make that

    1. It took about a day to make the bed (if that's what you are referring to??). I have posted later blogs with about 15 other beds I designed, which I will hopefully be selling on the website soon :) Cheers for the comment.
